Godhuma rava sweet pongal
Healthy and delicious wheat rava pongal with jaggery. Pongal 2016 special recipe Happy. When my friends were asking what special recipe for this year’s pongal, I told I have already posted sweet potato poli and that’s it. Then one of my friend suggested rava sweet pongal. I too thought it was a great idea and should try and post. Then thought I could try with wheat rava. I had thought this before too, to make something sweet with wheat rava. Wheat rava sweet pongal recipe

Recipe Cuisine: Indian  |  Recipe Category: Sweets
Prep Time 5 mins    |  Cook time: 30 mins     Serves: 4


Wheat rava – 1/2 cup

Jaggery – 1/2 cup

Moong dal / Paasi paruppu – 2 tbsp

Salt – 1 generous pinch

Cardamom – 1, powdered

Cashew nuts – 5

Ghee – 2 tbsp

Water – 1 & 1/2 cups to 2 cups


  1. First heat a tsp of ghee and roast cashew nuts until golden. In the same ghee, roast the wheat rava for a minute in medium flame.
  2. Wheat rava sweet pongal step 1
  3. Add boiling water, cooked moong dal and salt. Mix well and let it get thick. 
  4. Wheat rava sweet pongal step 2
  5. Cook covered for 4 minutes or until done in medium flame. Mix well. (You can apparently pressure cook)

  7. In another vessel, boil 1/4 cup water and add jaggery. Heat until completely gets dissolved.

  9. Add it to the cooked wheat rava. Mix well.Wheat rava sweet pongal step 5
  10. Keep cooking and once the syrup gets absorbed well, add one tsp of ghee at a time and mix well.

  12. Once the mixture leaves the sides of the pan, add cashew nuts and cardamom. Mix well.
  13. Wheat rava sweet pongal step 7


    • Take note, 2 tbsp of moong dal should be cooked and kept ready for this recipe.
    • I used 1 & 1/2 cup water to cook the rava. If you want you can add 2 cups water and cook.
    • Salt enhances the sweetness, so add generous pinch.
    • You can add cloves and edible camphor in this recipe.

  4. Interesting twist on the traditional pongal. Texture must be more like kesari (dry), no? Instead of gooey like Pongal because of the godhuma rava? Happy Pongal!

    1. Yes it will be like kesari, but you can try with more water ratio if you want more moist.
