Sundal is a traditional healthy snack offered and severed as prasadam during golu time mainly. Though we all make it, it’s often related to golu. This year since I am away on a vacation, could not keep golu. But made this one long time back and had it in my drafts. I have used macaroni pasta, you can use any of your favorite, but highly recommend the small varieties as it should blend with sundal.

Pasta sundal recipe

Brown chickpeas / chana – 1/2 cup

Macaroni – 1/2 cup

Grated coconut – 1/4 cup

Idli podi/ sundal podi – 1 tbsp

Salt – as needed

To temper

Oil – 2 tsp

Mustard – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Red chilli - 1

Asafoetida – a generous sprinkle

Finely chopped ginger – 1 tsp

Curry leaves – 1 sprig


  1. Soak chana overnight. Before cooking, drain water and cook with little salt and enough water for 3 whistles in medium flame. Cook pasta too with salt, as per package instructions, until soft. Not overcooked.
  2. 1-cook
  3. Heat a pan with oil and temper with the items given under ‘To temper’ table in order. Add cooked chana drained from water. Add little salt and give it a fry.
  4. Add cooked pasta, mix well. Add sundal podi or idli podi.
  5. Lastly add grated coconut and mix well.


  • Make sure to cook pasta just right, not over cooked.
  • Cook chana with salt, otherwise it will be bland.
  • Sundal podi or idli podi is optional.
  • Chana measure, pasta measure can be altered according to one’s preference.

It is very delicious and filling with pasta in it. Enjoy as such!
