My brother is a big fan of coconut rice that my mom makes, I too just love it. Its very flavourful and simple to make too. My mom adds soaked and then fried urad dal to this rice, which makes it protein rich and flavourful too. Always the roasted urad dal and coconut is a flavourful combo,like in coconut thogayal.

Oats pongal recipe | Indian oats recipes

Pongal and oats makes a good combo as both are meant to be mushy. I make this oats pongal for lunch and have it with sambar for a filling meal… If you have chutney also for side dish,then you will never complain anything,just make it,eat hot,its really good!  One day saw the Saffola oats advertisement in the magazine about this Oats pongal and got tempted and made instantly and had for lunch. You can call this Oats kichdi too.

Recipe Cuisine: Indian  |  Recipe Category: Snack
Prep Time: 5 mins    |  Cook time: 25 mins    serves: 2


Oats(I used Quacker quick cook) - 1/2 cup

Moong dal/paasi paruppu - 1/4 cup

Turmeric - 1/8 tsp

Salt - As needed(I added 1/2 tsp)

Water - 1 cup(adjust as per needed)

To Temper

Ghee/oil - 1 tsp

Pepper - 1 tsp

Jeera - 1 & 1/2  tsp

Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp

Ginger Chopped - 1 tsp

Green Chilly - 2

Curry leaves - A sprig


  1. Pressure cook moong dal until mushy. Crush pepper and jeera coarsely,slit the green chillis. Heat a pan with ghee/oil and temper with the items given in order under medium flame.Add water,turmeric and salt and bring to boil.

  3. Add the cooked dal and oats and mix well. Cook until you get a porridge consistency.

  5. Cook covered in low flame for 2-3 minutes or until you get your desired consistency.

  • The consistency can be varied according to your wish just adjust the water ratio.
  • You can also cook everything in pressure cooker together. But sometimes dal is not getting cooked properly.
  • Always eat the pongal hot.
Serve hot with sambar/chutney.

Spicy Vegetable biryani / Pulao recipe


We call this “Vegetable Biryani” in our home. As far as I know, my mom makes rarely biryani and my mom in law never makes biryani! They dont use cinnamon,cloves,fennel,bay leaves in their cooking. Till now my MIL hates those masalas… But after I came here to SG I started experimenting and started using these masalas and my kid loves it! My kid started eating biryani at the age of 2 and he used to eat only biryani most of the days that time!! I too am used in handling all these masalas now a days …

Corn bread rolls recipe

I liked this Corn Rolls Recipe when I saw in the cookbook I borrowed from library. The recipe needed ‘cream style corn’,which I was hearing for the first time. Then bought that too and tried immediately … Great snack for kids in the evening.
Corn Rolls Recipe


Bread slices 4
Cream style corn 3/4 cup
Onion 1/2, chopped
Garlic 1, chopped
Pepper powder 1/2 tsp
Tomato sauce 1 tsp
Salt As needed
Corn flour 2 tblsp
Sesame seeds 1 tsp
Oil 1 tblsp




  1. To Prepare the stuffing,Heat a pan with oil and add the chopped garlic. Fry for a minute and add the chopped onions and fry till transparent.Add the cream style corn and mix well.

  2. Add pepper powder and sauce and fry till you get a thick stuffing.

  3. Trim the edges of the bread and roll with a rolling pin to make thin squares.

  4. Prepare a batter with corn flour with 1/4 cup of water.Spoon 2 tsp of the stuffing in the bread .

  5. Apply the corn flour batter in the sides of the bread.Roll the bread carefully.Seal the sides.

  6. Give a quick dip in the corn flour batter and sprinkle or roll over the sesame seeds.
  7. You can deep fry or shallow fry in a pan. Make sure you fry all the sides if you are shallow frying. Fry until crisp.

Serve hot with tomato sauce.

  • You can also bake the rolls,pre heat the oven to 190oC and bake until you get a golden crust.
  • You can get cream style corn in tins or boxes. I got from Fairprice where we find canned foods.

Corn kebab recipe, learn how to make corn kebab with step by step and full video recipe - Both baking and deep fried version!
After trying Gulnar seekh kebab, this is my second kind of kebab attempt at home. As my hubby is very fond of kebabs, I really want to try different kinds of kebab. This is a recipe I took from a cookbook like my last kebab recipe. Just did few changes to suit our taste. Very simple, I have made it in combination oven,even if you don’t have oven,you can try grilling in pan or just deep fry or shallow fry them as the original recipe calls for.

Corn - 2

Potato - 2

Bread slice - 4

Corn flour - 3 tbsp

Onion - 1

Coriander leaves,Chopped - 2 tbsp

Mint leaves,Chopped - 1 tbsp

Lemon juice - 2 tsp

Melted butter - 1 tbsp

Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp

Garam masala - 1/2 tsp

Red chilli powder(optional) - 1 tsp

Salt - As needed(or 1 tsp)

Oil - 2 – 3 tsp


  1. Grate corn roughly. Boil potatoes,peel and discard the skin and mash it.Crumble the bread slices freshly in mixer.

  3. Mix everything except oil in a bowl. If the grated corn is too watery discard the juicy milk from corn. No need to squeeze out,just let the extra water go.

  5. Pre heat oven to 230o C. Mix well and make a dough. Make sure it is not too soggy, add more bread if needed. (only if needed).
  6. Dough
  7. Soak the wooden skewers 3 hours before if you are using wooden. Take a big ball of the dough and press it along the middle of the skewers to make kebabs. Make sure the kebabs are not too thick. roll to make it thin and smooth.
  8. Before bake
  9. If you are going to bake over a rack, foil it and drizzle melt butter  and arrange the kebabs over it. Bake for 20-25 mins or until the edges get golden brown.Turn in between in the middle of baking carefully without hurting yourself in the hot walls of the oven.
  10. Baked


  • You can deep fry simply if you want, without baking.
  • Butter adds a great flavour for kebabs, when you bake it.
  • I dint add garam masala and red chilli powder, still the spice level was ok with the pepper powder. But you can add garam masala alone if you want that flavour.
  • Don't skip coriander or mint,it gives a lot of flavour to this…

Brush with butter or oil. Do anyone ask why one of the kebab is only half? Yes yes I tasted it.Tongue.
Enjoy with green chutney or simply chilli sauce. Enjoy when its hot ! The corn,butter,pepper,onion,coriander and mint,lemon makes a wonderful blend of flavours! You can deep fry the kebabs too, like below in the picture.

Bread upma recipe - Easy breakfast,snack or even lunch box idea for your kids with bread as main ingredient and other easily available ingredients.
My kid is not a big fan of bread upma,he prefers other snacks using bread than this bread upma. But I love any upmas. Bread upma is a real treat too for me. This is a good tea time snack for kids.You can make it in a jiffy when the are in real hunger. Will post my kid’s favorite bread snacks in recent future, as he has got holidays now.

Bread slice - 4

Onion - 1

Tomato - 1

Green Chilli - 2

Sambar powder - 3/4 tsp

Turmeric powder - 1/8 tsp

Ginger garlic paste (optional) - 1/2 tsp

Salt - 3/4 tsp

Curry Leaves - 1 sprig

Coriander leaves - To garnish

Ghee - 1 tsp

To temper

Oil - 1 tbsp

Mustard - 3/4 tsp

Urad dal - 1 tsp

Channa dal - 1 tsp

Cashew nuts(optional) - 3-4

  1. Cut the bread slices into bite size squares. Slice the onion,green chillies and chop tomato.
  2. Heat a pan with oil and season with the items given under the ‘To Temper’ table(I omitted cashews).Fry onions till transparent and add the ginger garlic paste and fry for a minute.

  4. Add tomatoes,salt and fry till tomatoes turn soft.Add turmeric and sambhar powder and stir well. Sprinkle some water.

  6. Add the bread pieces and mix/toss well.Add ghee,keep in low flame and cook for two minutes to see golden brown spots here and there in the bread pieces.

  • Add a tsp of garam masala/ kitchen king masala/ biryani masala/ pav bhaji masala for extra punch and flavour to this recipe.
  • You can omit tomatoes and add tomato sauce/ketchup.
  • Cashew,ghee are optional to enhance the taste.
  • You can wheat bread (or multigrain/whole meal bread)instead of white bread.
  • I have seen in other blogs using crushed peanuts,so if you like you can add that too in the end.
  • Sprinkle a tsp of lemon juice at the end if you want an extra zing.
Garnish with the coriander leaves,serve hot with tomato ketchup or onion raita.
