Vellai kurma recipe
Vellai kurma white kurma, a south Indian vegetable gravy in which vegetables are cooked in coconut based white masala for a flavourful dish that goes well with chapathi, puri, idli or dosa.
Everytime I make my regular mixed veg kurma, I would think I should try something different. White kurma, the name itself is very tempting and wanted to try for idiyappam mainly. But had no clue how to make it. I got several requests now to post vellai kurma. So thought I should try making it.
I adapted this recipe from a video. I am back from my India trip, 3 weeks of time flew away just like that. Lots of travel (which I love) and cooking in between. I hope you saw my Instagram posts. I am yet to come back to full swing. Somehow managing everyday routine, so much tired and lazy ;P Today I pushed myself to post this kurma as it has been so long I posted an interesting recipe. I scheduled all simple posts and went for the trip, now should get into some serious cooking.
I am yet to approve and reply to your comments and queries, thanks for being patient, I will definitely answer each one of you soon.
My MIL’s mixed veg kurma is somewhat similar but cannot be said white kurma. I am glad I tried this one, the flavour was so refreshing and awesome. Aj too loved this a lot. This comes handy when you wan to make side dish for chapati without tomato. When you run out of tomato, you can make this.

Vellai kurma white kurma, a south Indian vegetable gravy in which vegetables are cooked in coconut based white masala for a flavourful dish that goes well with chapathi, puri, idli or dosa.
White kurma recipe


  • Potato – 3, small
  • Beans – 5
  • Carrot – 1/2
  • Green peas – 1/4 cup
  • Cauliflower florets – 1 cup
  • Onion - 1
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • To grind

  • Coconut, grated – 3/4 cup
  • Green chilli – 5, small
  • Cashew nuts – 5
  • Fried gram dal, pottu kadalai – 1 tsp
  • Small onions, shallots - 6
  • Garlic, small variety – 5 flakes
  • Ginger chopped – 1/2 tbsp
  • Fennel – 1/2 tsp
  • Cinnamon – 1/4 inch piece
  • Clove – 1
  • Cardamom – 1
  • To temper

  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Fennel – 1/2 tsp
  • Cinnamon – 1/4 inch piece
  • Clove – 1
  • Cardamom – 1


  1. Peel the skin of potato, carrot and chop it along with beans, finely. Keep aside with green peas. Cut cauliflower into bite sized pieces and soak in hot water with salt until use.
  2. In a container, place the chopped veggies except cauliflower. Add 1/4 tsp sugar, little salt and water (1/4 cup). Pressure cook just for a whistle.
  3. Gather and grind all the ingredients under ‘To grind’. First grind without water and later add water and grind smoothly.
  4. Heat a kadai with oil and temper with the items given under ‘To temper’ table.
  5. Add sliced onion and fry until soft. Add the ground paste and give it a mix. (I transferred to a heavy bottomed vessel)
  6. Add cooked vegetables, cauliflower and required water (2 cups). Simmer until cauliflower gets cooked and gravy gets thick.
  7. Cauliflower should get cooked, so make sure to add enough water. As cools down, gravy will thicken slightly.  Add torn curry leaves, lemon juice and mix well.


  • Add more potato and cauliflower to keep the kurma on whiter side.
  • My potatoes after chopping roughly came 1 & 1/2 cups.
  • Do not over cook the veggies. Here in singapore, cauliflower gets cooked and mashed very fast. So I add separately only.
  • Keep mixing to avoid the gravy getting burnt.
  • I added 2 tsp of coconut oil and it was really good.
  • You can add coriander leaves too for garnish.

You can serve this with Idli, dosa, chapati, idiyappam or even puri .

Beetroot thayir pachadi recipe, Beetroot raita

Beetroot thayir pachadi or beetroot raita, a colourful accompaniment for south Indian lunch. The colour of the raita is really pretty and attractive with the natural colour from beetroot.
I have not tried thayir pachadi with beetroot before. Only make with carrot, the same way as this. When I wanted to try different thayir pachadi other than the regular vendakkai thayir pachadi; cucumber thayir pachadi or nellikai thayir pachadi, I had beetroot in stock, so made this for lunch as accompaniment.

Beetroot chutney recipe, beetroot coconut chutney

Beetroot chutney recipe in south Indian style as side dish for idli dosa. Simple ingredients, tasty and healthy accompaniment with an attractive colour.
I had some half beetroot after making stir fry, sitting in fridge. Vj too told he tasted beetroot chutney during his stay and it tasted good. So I wanted to try this chutney with the beetroot I had. Actually I had this with crispy roast dosa, Aj too had some and we liked it. But this could be best accompaniment for the cocktail idlies, which I have posted earlier. Three different coloured, flavoured idli with three different coloured chutneys will be really attractive right?

Pineapple peanut soda recipe

Pineapple peanut soda is a drink for peanut lovers, quite a different drink. This is usually prepared with cola drinks, just by adding a handful of peanuts to the bottle and have it as such. But here, I have tried with pineapple.
I saw this idea in Instagram last year, it sounded so different, as well as I was bit hesitant to try thinking how it would taste, but later realized soda and peanuts go with each other well and thought I should try.

Mango frozen yogurt recipe, mango froyo

Mango frozen yogurt recipe without ice cream maker. Simple ingredients and a rich dessert with mango and greek yogurt. I have used greek style yogurt, but you can use homemade curd too.
When I got this Greek style yogurt for my yogurt popsicle, I totally fell in love with it. It is so creamy and delicious with few drops of vanilla and fresh fruits. I love it even with my not so favorite fruits. This is the second tub I am buying, this time, to try this mango frozen yogurt.
In Singapore, frozen yogurt or froyo is really popular. Especially few froyo  shops are really good they provide a wide range of flavours and toppings. I have never tried any froyo here, some how never knew what to order. I just keep staring from outside and pass by. Should sure try soon at Ilao Ilao.

Chinna vengaya chutney recipe, small onion chutney

Onion chutney with small onions – chinna vengayam (shallots) and curry leaves, without tomato and coconut. A delicious south Indian chutney side dish for idli, dosa.
I like to try different south Indian chutneys for idli dosa, mainly for idli as we have idli for almost 4 days in a week. Never get bored of idlies these days. Since onion tomato chutney is family favorite, I make it often. But it needs tomato and coconut. Both will not be available some times and I started making this small onion chutney for quite a while now. I add curry leaves and garlic too for extra flavour. I always use tomato and coconut a lot and small onions will always be in stock as I use it sparingly. It comes handy when tomato and coconut is not in stock, make this simple yummy chutney.

Dry fruits nuts milkshake
Dry fruits and nuts milkshake is a rich and thick milkshake that gives you instant energy. Best for kids to take in the morning to keep them full and fueled.
I got recipe request from a reader friend for this dry fruits and nuts milkshake. So made and clicked last month. Inspite the fact it is not having any icecream in this milkshake, it turns out thick and rich because of the nuts in it. But if you want, you can add a scoop of ice cream too for tempting your kids.

  • Badam - 4
  • Cashew nuts - 4
  • Pistachios - 10
  • Dates - 4
  • Milk, chilled - 1 cup
  • Nutmeg - A pinch
  • Cardamom - 1


  1. Soak badam, cashew, pistachios, dates in luke warm water for an hour.
  2. Peel badam, pista and dates and discard the skin. Transfer the soaked dry fruits to mixer.
  3. Add 1/4 cup milk and grind first.
  4. Add remaining milk, cardamom, nutmeg and blend well smoothly.


  • You can add few raisins and fig too in this. I have added what is available easily at home.
  • If you like the nuts coarse texture, you can grind as needed.

Jhal muri recipe, jhalmuri

Jhal muri is a delicious street food, quick snack made with Muri (puffed rice) / pori as main ingredients. Vegetables, spice powders added along with tangy ingredients and magic ingredient mustard oil.
I have not tasted jhal muri before, I thought it would taste like the Beach style kaara pori I already posted. But the flavour was so different and really loved this quick snack. There are many variations available with this I guess. But what I have shared is made up with the ingredients I had. The vegetables that go in can vary, but the main ingredient that is unique flavour in this is mustard oil.

Pineapple sorbet recipe

Pineapple sorbet is an easy summer treat, this particular recipe does not need any ice cream maker. Such a flavourful dessert with the natural flavour and goodness from juicy pineapple.
I tasted pineapple sorbet first time in Punjab grill. It was served complementary in between the serving. It was so flavourful and delicious. I never thought to try it out at home. This time when I got juicy sweet pineapple from fairprice, I thought I will try sorbet with it. I made it really simple, but you can add some of your own touch like adding some mint leaves or throw in some ginger and it turns really good. Trust me this itself is simple and delicious.

Sharjah shake recipe, sharjah milkshake

Sharjah shake is a milkshake with banana and chocolate drink powder as main ingredients. Kids would love it with chocolate and banana combo.
We used to make this in our childhood days with maltova. I have not tasted this sharjah shake in shops. But Vj have told few times about this drink and I have made few times too. But never clicked. This time when few bananas were about to go bad, I froze it to use later. I thought this time I will make this sharjah milkshake. This is a very easy and nice way to save the spoiling banana. Just peel and freeze in ziploc and later you can use for milkshake for thick and rich milkshakes without ice cream. This milkshake can be done with ice cream, but with frozen banana and cashewnuts, its already rich and thick, so no need to increase the calories on top of all the other ingredients.
