Whenever I buy banana stem, I make vazhaithandu poriyal most of the times. Very rarely I have made vazhaithandu kootu, sambar or mor kuzhambu. I knew mom makes sweet pachadi with it. I vaguely remember the taste. Was thinking of trying out, so last week had little vazhaithandu left after making poriyal. It was too less for making poriyal again and am not a big fan of sambar with it. So thought would make pachadi with it just for me and Vj. I followed the same way as I make mango pachadi, just added tamarind as vazhaithandu needs some tangy touch. Turned out really good and I had as such. Goes well with vathal kuzhambu, puli kuzhambu or sambar.

I have been thinking to post this recipe in my website for couple of years now, but was afraid if I would get it right or not and about the ghee quantity that goes in. As Diwali is nearing, I was preparing some posts to line up. So this year I thought I should try this sweet right in the beginning itself, otherwise as usual will skip this. This is the first time I am trying this, but it was really easy to pull it off. As I have made few burfis earlier like badam burfi, carrot burfi, 7 cups burfi, this was really easy to make too. I reduced the ghee quantity that was mentioned in the cookbook to half as it was too much for me.

Mochai sundal recipe, mochai malli sundal

Mochai sundal recipe with coriander and lemon added for extra zing. Mochai is by itself very flavourful, with coriander added to it, it turns out really delicious and flavourful.
I make kuzhambu with mochai mostly and love it totally. I love fresh mochai too in the mixed vegetable kootu and in brinjal curry. This is the first time I am making sundal with dried mochai and loved it. Vj too loved it a lot, so I was really happy with the outcome. I wanted to make something different from the usual, so added coriander leaves ground along with coconut and gave finishing touch with a squirt of lemon. It was quite refreshing for a change from the regular sundals.

I make idli podi only for my sake as both Aj and Vj doesn’t eat idli or dosa with just podi. Aj off late loves podi dosai, but big no for idli. So it’s just for me, that means never take risk of trying other recipes as it is a project for me. Once I tried a recipe, it became a flop and it was a punishment for me to finish that podi.

I have not tasted any dessert that has cinnamon in it, except for the fruit cake I tried. I loved it. Other than that, I have not tasted anything like a crumble or pie with cinnamon flavour. I wish to, but didn't get chance. For the first time, I tasted cinnamon bread sticks from pizza hut at a get together. Me and Aj loved it and decided to try at home. I made it simply with what I had in mind and saw in few websites. I stuck to my pizza base recipe and the glaze as in my sugar cookies, except that I made it thin.

I love the red chutney that they serve in Saravana bhavan here in singapore. It has an unique flavour that is different from the red chutney or the onion tomato chutney I usually make. So wanted to try this chutney for long time. After few tries, came up with this hotel saravana bhavan style kara chutney. The garlic and lots of chopped coriander gives a different flavour for the chutney.

Saravana bhavan hotel style tomato chutney recipe with step by step pictures. Red coloured chutney with lots of coriander leaves and garlic flavour.

Saravana bhavan style tomato chutney


Onion – 1
Tomato – 2
Garlic – 6 flakes
Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
Coriander leaves – 1/ 8 cup
Salt – As needed
To temper
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard – 1/2 tsp


  1. Heat a tsp of oil in kadai and fry cubed onion, tomato and garlic until tomatoes turn mushy.
  2. Cool down, grind smoothly.
  3. Heat remaining oil, splutter mustard, add ground paste. Add little water if needed.
  4. Add salt, red chilli powder, chopped coriander leaves and boil for 2 mins.


  • I used a regular sized onion and two small tomatoes.
  • Make sure to add more garlic if needed. I used large sized flakes. If small, use 8 flakes.
  • If you want, add coriander leaves after mustard splutters and give a quick stir before pouring the ground mixture.
  • You can add a pinch of sugar in this chutney.

Just have to decide on the side dish. I am comfortable grinding my batter in grinder as I grind in bulk with 5 cups idli rice. So never have tried grinding in mixie.

One of my mami makes this awesome brinji rice, which I just love like anything. I have tasted only once, but the flavour is still lingering in my mind. If you are a regular reader of my blogger, you might know that, I am the first generation in my home using masalas like cinnamon, fennel, ginger garlic paste in my cooking. So the first time I tasted her brinji rice, I was totally in love with the flavours. All I could get about the recipe was, she used coconut in her brinji rice, lots of garlic, ginger and fennel. And more unique, she uses beetroot in her rice. Surprised? Yes, I am not sure that's how she usually make it with beetroot or it is added so that the little one in the house eats all the vegetables.
